Error Code: 0x87FF0004
Now what? Please help!
I'm supposed to reinstall but from where? Where is that SP 2 download that
I'm supposed to be installing?
I've restarted my laptop for three times since the failure and the "install
updates" balloon just isn't coming back! So what's a girl to do?

I'm having the same problem as Tempest, yet the prosposed solution was
definitely not helpful. SP2 just will not install. Sometimes, it hangs at ~
30% and sometimes at ~50%. Either way, that's as far as I make it.

The updates for IE6 SP1 will not complete either. Without WinXP SP2, I
cannot install IE7RC1.

I'm feeling a bit lost here. BTW - repairing XP just sets me on the
wonderfully logical path of having to revalidate my Windows installation,
which takes a phone call every time now. Fun, fun, fun! Any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you & Tempest research all the SP2 problems together with
the probs with the 60 odd criticals required after SP2, in the update group
and you will find lots of different solutions to you problems.
There appears to be no single solution that sorts everyone's problem.
It would be a case of trial and error.
You and others are suffering from the self-created troubles of not keeping
up to date.
To No Life, I would suggest that you resist the urge to install IE7 - it is
betaware - unless you are a betaware tester - or you have a second computer
to muck about with.
Happy hunting

"You and others are suffering from the self-created troubles of not keeping

How do you propose I update my copy of XP Home when it comes on an encrypted
disc? It's a new installation on a new computer, so a little less looking
down your nose and a bit more actual help would be why we came here.

I am looking to install IE7RC1 (mmhmm... beta) after upgrading to SP2, yet
I couldn't even get IE6 to update or XPSP2 to complete its installation.
That was my point. It's dangerous to place your soapbox in the mud.

BTW - isn't this the Microsoft Update Group? I have searched - and found
this to be *most* like the problem I was experiencing. Perhaps someone
helpful and knowledgeable can chime in on this problem.

Hi Tempest
You have had no further responses - are you still monitoring your thread
which was hijacked by another?

What did you find out? I am having the same problem and can't find how or
where to run reinstall. I did get the same error code as you. What did you
do? Thanks.

Try the steps Torgeir got from Matt, who got them from MS:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...56173491671db1

How did I get that? I Googled Error Code: 0x87FF0004:
http://groups.google.com/groups?lnk=...n&q=0x87FF0004
'SP2 install freeze' was the first useful English language hit there:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...67901416835f58
That led me to checking product key:
http://groups.google.com/groups/sear...ng+product+key
Which led me to the link I posted at the top - hope it works for you.
