I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. when windows starts, it says
Windows XP Home Edition, SP 1. Windows update says that I have the SP2
already installed. I'm speculating that there is a corrupt data somewhere.
Does anyone know where I might be able to find it?
Much obliged for your help...

Right click on My computer, choose properties. On the general tab does
it say that SP2 is installed?

Then you do not have SP-2 installed.
Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist to install SP-2:

O-kay... I'll give it a shot following your website instructions... just one
more question here...
Why in the world would the update website be telling me that I have the
service pack 2 already installed?? Does this have anything to do with my
installation history or what?

Thanks again for all your help!!

When you go to Windows Update website, you are viewing information from the
Installation History.
Microsoft has no record of what is installed.
