With Windows XP service pack 1 I now get a taskbar message saying this
version of windows is no longer up to date. Does this mean there will be no
further windows updates available for it? Apart from this are there any
other restrictions now on this version of windows xp? I've tried updating
to sp2 before and it's caused major problems so I'd really like to just keep
sp1.

Support for SP1 ended 10-Oct-2006

Only restriction - no updates, no security patches, nothing.

You don't mention what the problems were with SP2

But will it sill be able to use windows update to obtain the updates?

My box is XP Professional SP 1a. When I attempt to use windows update
intending to install SP 2, it failed. After clicking at either the 'Custom'
or 'Express' button, my system got shut down in the midst before it listing
the items require for installation.
