I have problems with Windows update from my windows XP machine.

It all started shortly before installing SP2, I thing it was after upgrading
the windows update SW. I couldt update but can't remember the errorcode. Then
I wanted to install SP2. But I couldn't because windows update just did not
work. I downloaded the .exe installer and installed SP" without problems, but
windows update still does not work. My computer is a images of one of my
colleges - same hardware and everything works fine for him (also windows
update). The only problem I have is that windows update does'nt work.

I am behind a Microsoft proxy and a Microsoft ISA server (Windows 2000
server) and so are my college who has no problems. I have tried several of
the solutions in the posts (disabling proxy, disabling ISA, renaming
c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution). After renaming SoftwareDistribution I
succeseded in downloading 3 out of 3 updates, but when I tried to download
the rest of the pending updates none of them got downloaded and i got the
error 80072EFD - The same as before.

Then I tried http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;836941
and succeded in downloading http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab
so there is nothing wrong with my connection it says, which I belive because
my college behind the same proxy and ISA server has no problems.

I hope someone out there knows what I am doing wrong

Best Regards Morten

That isn't the same thing. Your proxy may be allowing connections
initiated by you but not by the account being used by BITS (for example).

It sounds as if you can use WU to get a list of what it thinks you need.
Why don't you use that as a list of things that you should download and
install manually? That would avoid the problem with the ISA proxy
prohibiting anonymous connections. Eventually there may be a fix
for proxy users.

BTW it is not clear to me that KB836941 applies in your case.
I think it was meant to help WUv4 users (including XP users
who are still using that service). Since you have XPsp2 you
should now be using WUv5. Perhaps your colleague is still
using WUv4?
