Is it possible to use the Windows XP SP2 Network Installer available on a
single computer? Will it damage a current installation of Windows? Or is it
just recommended for users not to download it because it contains more files
than necessary (i.e. it is not tailored to a single user's installation as it
would be via Automatic update or regular Windows Update)?

Kurt;
The net result would be the same whether you used Network Installation
or Automatic Update.
The Network Installation is simply the full SP-2 suitable for burning
to CD to use again and again.
The AU version is a custom download for that computer and can not be
saved for reuse.
No damage will be caused to a single computer using the Network
Installation.
Personally I prefer the Network Installation since I can burn it to CD
for use on other computers or reinstalling Windows as necessary.

Yes,
You, can use it on a single computer. Many administrators with more than one
Computer to update will just burn it to a CD and go from one to the other.
The Network download is so large because it is a so called "superset" of all
changes [SP1 included] made since the release of XP. Several things: If like
me you don't use the Messenger and removed it, you will get it back with
SP2.
You will have to go into Outlook Express Tools/Options and remove a check
mark in order to prevent loss of E-mail attachments. The XP Firewall will be
turned on by default so if you have and prefer another one, you will have to
go into Network Connections and turn off XP's version.
