Windows xp sp2 uninstall fails

I cannot uninstall SP2 using Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs, get the
' Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard' window -
Inspecting Current Configuration
Checking for necessary space
Stopping Services
Restoring Catologues
Running processes before uninstall, -(System stops responding at this
point)

The last installation of SP2 was downloaded version, after 4
installations/uninstallations from CD, as installations of Windows Updates
kept failing,although downloading successful.
Also having problems installing/uninstalling other non-Microsoft programs,
Windows Task manager reports -'not responding'.
Not getting any error messages.

Uninstalls that bug take a long time and can freeze up for long periods of
time.
