My system was performing the auto update.
SP2 was being installed, msg indicated it was successful,
however the message also said REBOOT required.

System was unable to reboot until I selected SAFE MODE

when I returned to update page to try to continue with last
step I received this message:

[Error number: 0x8007043C]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I have no clue what went wrong.

Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode.

You have to be in normal mode to continue with Windows Updates.

Thank you for your response.
At least now I know there was nothing I could do.
I restored to every check point XP had created without success.
I also tried XP recovery from install disk without success.
I am presently rebuilding the machine from "restore all
factory settings" recovery disk. In a few minutes my machine
will "look" like new. Meaning nothing I installed after I
bought it will be there until I re-install it. (
