I have tried installing SP3 at least 5 times now. Each time it fails in the
middle of the install. When I check on the update page as to why I get this
"Error Code: 0x80070005" I think it has something to do with my registry, but
am not sure. So I have no idea really how to fix the problem. Further
either indirectly (because I don't have SP3) or simply the because the error
is effecting other things, many of the important updates I have tried to
install since SP3 have failed as well. It seems most have this error
code"Error Code: 0x8007F0ED" any help would be appreciated!

I have the same exact problem! I have read all the error items to see if
they applied to me, but to no avail. It appears to me it is imperative this
be downloaded and installed as later updates don't seem to install.

I also need help or advice on this issues

Dear Microsoft Support:

In the unlikely event that you should actually read this, please consider
this letter as an assignment by my personal counselor as therapy. It has come
to this…and I composed this offline so I would not get hacked.

It is obvious Microsoft has a problem with Win XP SP3, but is responding to
it like a frozen wooly mammoth. I receive different errors each time I
attempt to install it.
Here is my most recent error message:

“Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x8007054F

(And the canned suggestion

Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.

For self-help options:
• Frequently Asked Questions
• Find Solutions
• Windows Update Newsgroup

For assisted support options:
• Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for issues related to getting
updates)”

Done... Done... Done... Done and done! No chages noted. No real fixes noted.

The problem hass always been listed as a WIN XP System32 executable file in
use by an unspecified application. It is a different file each time. Yet,
Task Manager does not list the named file as running, and all applications,
except the Install Wizzard, are shut down.

I now am ignoring the Microsoft induced urge (URGENT – upgrade NOW) to waste
hours on my personal laptop attempting to install an un-installable service
pack.

SP3 will probably never work with the MS operating system packaged in my
Hewlett-Packard machine.

As a controls system software professional, I only test my own company's
software product on lab machines with the commercially purchased version of
MS Pro operating systems. The versions sold to HP and other computer
manufacturers are actually quite different than the “Gold” commercial
version. I can't meet ISO 9000 standards if I don't use the commercial
versions of Microsoft product.

I am unimpressed with WIN XP SP3 as a half-baked effort, for show only, for
software which Microsoft will soon withdraw support for. This a shameless
push by Microsoft to brow-beat users into upgrading their perfectly
acceptable Windows XP suites to Windows Vista.

I have submitted reports to Microsoft and attempted to get a response from
support, but have been ..... IGNORED. I suppose when you dominate a market
without a viable competitor for unhappy customers to switch to, you don't
really have to be concerned with customer satisfaction.

Shame on you Gates. I grew up in Seattle with you and knew your friends at
Lakeside. You were arrogant in prep school and your corporation has adopted
the same arrogance - the child has embraced the same character traits as the
parent.

This newsgroup has nothing to do with official MS Support.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

Please don't try to hijack others' threads, even if their Subject is generic enough
to make that seem warranted.

Obviously your symptom is not the same as the OP's (which is usually a
permissions issue).

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>set /a c = 0x54F
1359
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

An internal error occurred.
</cmd_output>

Obviously you need to find some context for this code to refine your symptom
description.

Tip: if there are not sufficient clues in *all* the diagnostics files the update
wrote to you could try supplementing those by running ProcMon and correlating
the writing of those messages by their lengths wherever you find them.

(rant snipped)

Good luck

I have this same exact error code and have also tried installing many times.
It installed okay on my laptop but no way will it install on my PC. I am
stumped. Hope we get a solution soon.

The thing that finally allowed me to download successfully was a download
from my computer vendor (HP). Have you been to the vendor's website to see
whether they have anything that needs to be downloaded pre-SP3? It was a
fluke that I discovered it, but I now have SP3. But I'm having a problem
downloading KB946648. It fails and I get an error code of: 0x8007F0ED. I
have ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Could that be me problem?
