Windows XP stalls

Hello
I have enabled since sometime autoupdate on an XP system and since then
massive downloads have started (I assume XP2).I am running Norton for virus
safety. What happens now is that after a short while the system stalls and it
is not even possible to CTRL_ALT_DEL into the task manager to see what has
happened. I disabled Autoupdate in the security Panel. That made the problem
go away.
On the other hand NORTON keeps complaining about Autoupdate being shut down
and as the computer is used by my family I have the same problem over again.
Is there a way to keep Autoupdate running on a lower Priority so that it
wont stall the computer? Is it Autoupdate in the first place? There are a few
posts that seem to indicate that but no real remedy is given beside turning
Autoupdate off
