Windows XP update blue screen locked

I did an update for Windows XP on my Gateway laptop and by mistake the laptop
was closed. The other user logged onto the computer with no problem no
realizing an update was in progress. The other user shut-down the computer
and know it is left on the Windows blue screen statin "installing update
(1-1)" and then flips the the screen "do not unplugged or turn off computer
it will log off automatically". Last time this happened the computer was
shut down by the user and the computer crashed. Can anyone help me or will i
have to shut the computer down manually because this has been trying to
update for atleast 12 hours.
