Specific Windows XP Updates are causing 4 of our office computers to BSOD. The computers exhibit all the same issues outlined by everyone in this post. I performed fresh installs of Windows XP with only motherboard chipset, video, and NIC drivers. I installed the Windows XP Updates that were causing the BSOD and the same BSOD issue continued. After performing hardware tests, I physically inspected all hardware components. 5 motherboard capacitors are saturated, buldging, and leaking. The 5 failing capacitors are the same ones in all 4 computers. All 4 PC's are Gateway 310S with intel 865 motherboards. Fortunatley each PC still had hardware warranty available. After replacing the motherboards all 4 computers are now able to perform all Windows updates without errors.

This is how I got passed the 8E stop error on Windows updates. We had a customer with a severely infected laptop. We used the standard spybot, adaware, virus scanners, et al response and cleaned it clean as we thought it could be. We could not update, though. After much searching I decided to try the Panda anti-rootkit tool here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Panda_Anti-Rootkit_d5457.html

which brought up this virus:

http://www.symantec.com/security_res...305-99&tabid=2

It looked like this when found:

%Windir%\System32:lzx32.sys

Anyway, Panda said it was going to get rid of it but didn't so I had to find a tool for it here:

This worked great and now the updates install without issue. Whoopie.
