Windows XP update download problem, error 0x80246008 ?

I am using Win-XP (Home), SP2. I have Norton Antivirus auto protect and of
course the Win-XP fire wall on.

Search for windows update reveals that I should download and install 15
security relevant updates. But every time the download itself fails and
obviously no update is installed. Deactivating Norton and Win-XP firewall
didn't help either.

One possible problem solution could be description in MS archive for
removing error 0x80246008. But unfortunately the description (at least in
German language is very ambiguous. For example it says to add in registry:
' hkey_local_Machine\software\Microsoft\windowsNT\Cu rrent
version\SVChost\netsvcs' the word 'BITS' under 'value'

I find that it is possble to enter the word 'BITS' in all three different
places. This is confusing.

Does anyone know waht the correct location under key ' ...netsvs' for the
enrty 'BITS' could be ?.
Thanks for yr. help

Hi angu01,

When you navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SvcHost
look in the right-hand pane for the string value called netsvcs (there is
also a subkey names netsvcs which appears beneath SvcHost when it is
expanded.........this is NOT the key that is being referred to in the
troubleshooter).
Double-click on netsvcs in the right-hand pane, and add BITS to the entries
that are in the Value data field.

In addition to the above, there is also this possible resolution for the
0x80246008 error:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...icleid=9&ln=en

Hi Patti
Thanks for yr. tips.
I could now enter the 'BITS' as the 'data value' under the 'netsvcs' as you
mentioned. I also tried the other resolution given in yr. reply -
unfortunately though
the downloads still keep failing.

Do you have another hint for me ?
Thanks for yr. support in advance

You're welcome :-)

Something that has worked to solve this error is to update the MSXML Parser:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
After d/loading and installing, restart your computer.

Hallow Patti
Thanks for yr. help.
I did as you recommended ...still unfortunately no success !!!.
The downloads stll fail.

I noticed now one thing though that out of 14 downloads recommended by
Microsoft, 2 could be downloaded this time but all of the rest 12 failed.
This was ofcourse to be expected because the download had failed earlier.

The installation of the 2 updates - as reported by automatic installation
s/w - was o.k, the installation log reported that such and such installation
failed but it didn't give any error number.

Why no error number ? ...Do you have any clue ?
Thanks for any suggestion or tip in advance

When at the Windows Update site, click on View installation history under
Other Options on the left side of the page.
For each of the failed updates, click on the Failed link under Status in the
chart on the right side of the page. See if further information concerning
the failure is presented to you.

Hi Patti
Thanks a lot for yr. tip. Following it I could find the download error number.

It is '80070003'

It seems that while downloading some 'path' cannot be found. But I could not
find a clear description 'which path' and how to repair the problem ?

Any hint from yr. side ?
Thanks and best regards
angu01

Hi Patti
Thanks for yr. patience and giving yet another tip.
I tried the trouble shooter for 0x80248013 - Stopped autom. update, deleted
required files and started autom. update again - unfortunately still all
remaining 10 security updates recommended by Microsoft still failed to
download.

I wonder as to why the download problem is only with Microsoft upadate
files. Ths system is working with al other downloads I tried as experiment

Meanwhile I have deinstalled the WIN-XP SP2, run 'Spyblaster' , ' Spybot',
'Adaware' and updated Norton virus scanner. But the windows update download
is still failing.

Any further idea would be welcome.
Regards
angu01

The download problem is specific to Windows Updates probably because the
problem involves files or services that are specific to Windows Update.

See if the information provided in this post by Torgeir Bakken (MVP) helps
you resolve the problem:
