Windows XP update kills logon

My Windows XP Pro laptop auto-installed updates last night on shutdown (Wed
Apr 15). On startup this morning, the system refuses my passwords and I
cannot log on. Refuses both user password for domain and administrator
password for the local machine.

Anyone else having this trouble? Any suggestions for recovery?
