Windows xp Update says update failed!

I have purchased a new pc with windows xp on it. When I run windows update it
shows me 19 critical updates. On clicking on Install it runs for a while but
against each critical update it says the update failed! and does not give any
reason why update has failed.

Can anoybody help me

I just found demodan and Taurarian had the same problem on 8/31/04 and 2/9/05
respectivley.
I did the following and it worked:
1) Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc, then pressed enter
a) Right clicked on the Automatic Updates Service, chose "Stop"
2) Click Start, select Run, typed in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution, then
pressed enter
a) Renamed edb to edb.tst
3) Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc, then pressed enter
a) Right clicked on the Automatic Updates Service, chose "Start"

My only addition is that the "edb" file is in a subfolder, "DataStore/Logs"

I followed the directions, and the updates are now downloading. (By the
way, my symptoms were identical. I'd just reinstalled XP, and went to the
website, which told me I needed 19 updates.

I tried the method told by Tallboy29 but it still did not work. I then
downloaded the patch to my pc and then ran it and then it worked fine. Do I
have to download all the individual updates and run it. Why I am not able to
update directly from the net.

Is there not a Details link associated with the failure message?

Otherwise look in your WindowsUpdate.log for more detail
about the failures.
