The above KB article describes how to determine IF file and registry
permissions are preventing an update from installing.
You'll need to check one of the installation logs of a failed update.
They are located in the WINDOWS directory [folder] and are in this
format: KBxxxxxx.log
The numbers will be of that specific update, as in KB927898, for example.
If you can't determine specifically where this issue is occurring you
can reset file and registry Permissions to their Default state:
