I've read through most of the messages here regarding this error code, and
they've all been basically useless. The machine downloads the updates just
fine, but fails during installation. All other machines on our network are
updating just fine; it's something about this machine. It pretty clearly has
nothing to do with antivirus or firewall. I've run the MGA tool referenced in
other posts to no avail. Clearing cookies and temporary internet files has
not helped, nor has resetting IE security options.

Does the machine update via WSUS or Windows Update? Assuming the latter...

1. CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

2. You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site
from a Windows XP-based computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy
server:

You're a gentleman and a scholar; this fixed the problem. Specifically,
registering the wups2.dll file as shown in the KB article referenced in
solution 1 did the trick. I thank you for your time and expertise.
