Hello, All!
I use an external USB disc as my backup device and I had
forgotten problems that I had with it and Microsoft Windows XP
updates but, when I returned from a short trip Sunday, 8 updates
were downloaded. I was invited to install them and to continue
working, which allowed me to see the system die and reboot
without installing everything. There were still updates to be
installed and the process repeated itself.
At that point, I remembered previous occasions and the cure. I
demounted the USB disc and everything went properly. Referring
to my notes, I found that this was a repetition of previous
events. There were large binary files on my USB disc which had
not been there previously and it seems that the update installer
writes these things to the last named disc and then is unable to
use them.
Is it not about time that Microsoft fixed this problem that has
been brought to their attention many times before? At very
least they could warn users to disconnect external hard discs. I
have not much hope but perhaps this post may be helpful if
others have similar setups.
