I own an original version of Windows XP Professional Update which I installed
on my computer. About 1 1/2 year ago, my computer was struck by lightning and
destroyed my motherboard as well as one of my hard drive. I had a computer
service center reapir my computer and install a new Hard drive. They
re-installed Windows XP and everything worked fine until I attempted to
download updates for my Windows XP. I was told that my version was not a
valid one. Yet, I did not pirate it, I simply had it installed by a computer
service center and still own my original version of Windows. I can provide my
product key to Microsoft, but there is no one to contact for this. What can I
do?

Are you sure the repair center used your original Product Key
to reinstall your Windows XP operating system?

Hi Carey,

I have just confirmed that my copy of Windows is genuine (the original SP
Home two years ago came pre-installed but a few months ago I installed SP2
and the current version is V6).
I get error 0x80240020 when trying to update Windows. My Windows Genuine
Advantage control-x is enabled. But under c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files
instead of installed status it shows Unplugged.

Thanks,

Joaquim Rola

This seems closest to my situation - I got factory installed XP from Dell and
upgraded to SP2 later and now I cannot validate and I cannot installed the
active x I need because it is unsigned. Do I have to download a particular
active x or enable unsigned active x? I don't understand any of this but I
sure am annoyed by it!! I know I'm not alone.

Isn't it wonderful to not only be considered a pirate until you prove
otherwise TWICE (although I am betting that a third one is in the offing
this coming Tuesday, any takers?), but then the program that checks you
won't work.

Great PR for your loyal, PAYING, customers, Microsoft. How much income are
you going to lose on this folly?

P.S. Course, Carey says that no one will be affected by WGA so what do I
know?

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects.
Right-click on each item denoted as "Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool" and select "Remove".

Afterward, visit the following web site:

Ok I've done this but I still cannot run the validation tool because of the
unsigned active x. And I cannot run the alternate method from its current
location for the same reason. I've been around this circle a half-dozen times
today.

A computer from dell would not be pirated!

Oops we both read this person post wrong.
She has a Active x problem not a Windows xp Validation problem
Regardless of that. A dell computer with xp factory installed would
not be pirated

Hey, Carey, I thought you said that no one had a problem with WGA. Have you
changed your mind and now post the hack?

LOL!
