Windows XP vs Windows Vista

I would like to know if anyone can and will tell me the difference between
Windows XP and Windows Vista?

from what I've been reading here the last few months (because I too have
wondered if a Vista upgrade would be beneficial), have absolutely
decided to stick with XP ... as L--O--N--G as possible. But to answer
your question: XP = stable, reliable, well supported by software
vendors, LESS system requirements etc, etc. etc

Vista = may work for you, may not (as is the case with MANY U-P-S-E-T
people posting here. I'd recommend reading through a few hundred posts
here before making any decision to move to Vista!

Bear in mind that the posts in this NG do not represent everyone who uses
Vista. Most people who post have a problem or complaint. People who are
eminently satisfied with Vista never bother to post here and say so. The
same is true in Apple or Linux newsgroups - posters are having trouble, or
are just malcontents.

For what its worth, I think Vista is fantastic. Don't be afraid to give it a
try.

Around $700 if you have a machine more than a year old, probably.

Vista needs fast hardware and lots of memory to be efficient, some other
hardware you already have may not work and you would have to buy new.

This is not to put you off trying it but if your XP is working well and
the machine is not pretty new then there will likely be additional cost
for upgrades + new parts.

Vista is fun to play with but if that's your only machine think
carefully. My suggestion if you can afford it is to consider purchasing
a separate machine and retail copy of Vista so you don't lose anything
in the transfer. You can get bare machines at places like www.geeks.com
cheap, then if you don't like Vista you can keep XP but have a faster
machine

Much depends on what you install it on, I have one 6 year old Asus that
needed only a graphics card and processor (which I planned to replace
anyway) and that works almost as well as the brand new ones.

Read posts in the Windows Vista newsgroups, there are many other
newsgroups than this.
Read other sites that seem unbiased.
I would suggest ignore the posts that seem like rants because some on
both side lack reason other than a blind agenda.

Keep in mind many places such as these support newsgroups are intended
to resolve issues and thus there will be computers with problems as a
hospital has sick people.
Neither may give a good view of the overall health.

Are you considering upgrading?
A new operating system available in itself has never been a good
enough reason to upgrade.
If there is nothing you expect to gain, you may be better off with
Windows XP.
Most should upgrade when new hardware or software require it.
This applies to upgrades of anything, not just computers or
technology.
Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years.

Windows Vista continues to perform well for me on two of my older
computers.
I like it.

The only problem with that advice is that "If" we are talking about the
OP's only machine and the OP has no copy of XP to fall back on he/she is
in trouble, and we do know that people take this decision too lightly. I
suggest we all remember when advising either way, else we end up with
"Ubuntu wiped my hard drive" all over again

XP is an OLD "operating system" long past its prime. Vista is a
new "operating system" that should be avoided, as it's bloated, no more
secure than XP and requires one to upgrade ones hardware to attempt to run
it in any useful fashion.

Like most blanket statements, not always true.
It depends a lot on the hardware.
Some need no hardware upgrades while others like me needed only memory
and even then, Vista performed with no changes.

Windows XP may be old but is certainly not "long past its prime".
Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years.
