Windows XP with Windows Media Format -- KB923689 and KB941569 -- showing as Critical Updates

Hi all,

I'm running XP Home on 4 PCs with SP3 and all fully patched. All PCs use
Windows Media Player 10.

Each month I install the Windows Updates manually on all my PCs, and all of
July's critical updates installed successfully.

However, in the past week or so, when I do a Custom check at the Windows
Update site, the following two critical updates are now showing just on
_ONE_ PC, a Dimension E520:

- Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5
(KB923689)
- Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5
and 11 (KB941569)

Does anyone have an idea why these updates would suddenly start showing and
why they show only on one machine?

Thanks.

Alan

Are the updates offered if you choose Express instead ?

Both updates are not included in XP SP3 and, apparently, were not
installed on the one system.
If you have *not* installed them yet, check in the WINDOWS directory
[folder] for the presence of the installation logs of both updates,
KB926389.log and KB941569.log.
If they are present, open them and copy&paste the contents into your
reply, please.
If they are not present then they were never installed on that one system.

Hi Mow,

There isn't a KB926389 log in the Windows directory.

I DO have a log for KB941569, and the log shows it was installed on
12/11/2007. I've pasted it below:

The log is peculiar, to put it mildly. KB941569 basically, updates
wmasf.dll. Yet, the KB941569.log shows the jscript and quartz dlls also
being updated. quartz.dll is associated with DirectShow.
I just downloaded KB941569 from the MS Download Center and extracted the
update's contents. There are no jscript nor quartz.dlls present.
So, let's give this a shot.
Download both updates and save them:

KB923689
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

KBKB941569
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

When the downloads complete close all open browsers and programs.
Install WindowsXP-KB923689-v2-x86-ENU.EXE first and reboot, even if not
requested to.
Now install WindowsXP-KB941569-x86-ENU.EXE and reboot if requested to.

The first update does not show SP3 as a system requirement and it *may*
be superflous. That would depend on no other Version of WMP being
present or, an alternative player being present that requires the other
2 files.

Since the update includes files for all of the WMP media format
runtimes, than it is possible that the update could not discern which
branch of files to be replaced due to some 'cleaning' of the
WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ subfolder, the registry, or from interference created
by security software [AV, security suite, anti-spyware,etc]

Mow,

Okay, I've installed both updates in the order that you specified.

When I go to WU I'm no longer being offered the two Critical Updates.
And...my MP10 seems to be working.

So, unless there are problems down the road, life is good.

Thank you.

Alan

You're most welcome, Alan. Since the update packages contain files for
all the different versions of WMP then perhaps they *should* have been
included in SP3.
Maybe including them would have caused isssues.
Dunno ... what matter is, they're installed and WU is happy and, WMP is
not vulnerable. <w>
