WINDOWS XP won't allow updates

My OS is Windows XP Pro. I have Automatic updates enabled but when I go to MS
site and download them it won't let me iinstall them. I ran a check on my
computer with BELARC Advisor and there are 26 downloads/hotfixes missing from
my system (11 of them are marked CRITICAL, the remainder are marked
IMPORTANT) I cannot find a reason or remedy to fix the problem so they will
install.
The error code is 0X80070003.
I'm a novice to the internal workings of a computer and need some very
basic and detailed assistance.
