Please see this MSKB on how to recover from the issue :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875355

Suggest starting the system to Safe Mode and then refer to this section:

Method 1: Remove Windows XP SP2 by using the Add or Remove Programs tool
in Control Panel
If it's not listed in Add/Remove Programs, try Method 2 from a Command
Prompt.
