If SP1 for W2K3 has been installed then there is no need to install the new
Security Updates posted last night from MS.They have been included in the
SP1 package

Running http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com will show you which updates apply
to Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Similar type of problem. After loading Server2003 Standard Edition SP1
Windows Update can no longer find the web page on its own. It keeps trying
the beta update page at
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...etathanks.htm? and I am unable
to reset it to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp.

I assume there are currently no further updates beyond SP1 for Server2003
(no updates found) but how can I correctly target my automatic updater?

The site is correct.
http://ws03sp1.update.microsoft.com/....aspx?ln=en-us

Please check the settings here: In IE, Tools-->Internet Options-->LAN
Settings then look at the Proxy. Is it spelled out, even if it is greyed
out? If not, is the Automatically detect settings checked? If not, check it.

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd <Enter>
4. In the Command Prompt, type: proxycfg -d <Enter>
<--This will set your proxy service to direct access and clear the proxy
cache.
5. Type: proxycfg -u <Enter>
<--This will set the proxy for BITS to the same settings as Internet Explorer.
6. Type: net stop wuauserv <Enter>
7. Type: net stop bits <Enter>
8. Type: net start bits <Enter>
9. Type: net start wuauserv <Enter>

Try the Windows Update again from a new Internet Explorer window.

Courtesy of Microsoft.

I have tried resetting IE proxy options (including cookies, files, and
objects), reset proxycfg, and stopped and started wuauserv and bits and my
automatic updates still targets the beta site. I can manually get to the
correct update site, but the wuauserv seems to be corrupted. Is this a
setting in the registery? There must some other location that the update
target is being set?

I have the same problem.
A new server, with Windows 2003.
Windows Update reported me about 20 updates available. But after installing
SP1 I can not check for Updates anymore. It´s using the correct
ws03sp1.update.microsoft.com site. Error number is 0x80072EE7

I have followed Taurarian directions with no success.
Also the article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941 was not useful.
We have no Web proxies or caches in the company, and I have tried with no
firewall inbetween with the same results.

Although I have no changed any MSIE default setting, except to add MS update
sites to Trusted Sites, does anybody know if the browser settings have been
strenghtened on SP1?

Everything is working now.
I found a DNS problem, since my DNS internal servers could resolve
www.microsoft.com but failed to resolve download.microsoft.com after
intalling SP1. I fixed that problem, and now downloads and updates are
working properly.
