Windows Update continues to tell me to update the same SP2 install. History
shows it has installed successfully, but it keeps coming back up a few
minutes after I install. ANyone know what is happening

download and run Belarc Advisor - www.belarc.com - see what it has you say
about your Hotfix status.
Only install one or two items at a time.
Do you get any error messages on boot?
do you have any system 'optimisers' installed?
Do you have your AV running when installing the updates? (Don't!! - Which AV
is it?)

I am having the identical problem with Win 98 SE and the latest security
update for Windows and SP1 for Outlook Express. I tried again with the AV and
firewall off...Update still tells me I need to download the patches again.

The Windows 98 update shows in my program add/delete list, the Outlook
Express service pack does not (unless it isn't removeable?).

I ran my Belarc Advisor, but I am unable to make anything useful out of the
list of software versions.

I remember this happening once before...I almost think the solution was for
Microsoft to fix something in the patch. However, I can't remember for sure.

The section of Belarc Advisor you want to look at is called "Installed
Microsoft Hotfixes" not "Software Versions."
It'll show you the status of the hotfixes that Belarc can verify.

dak,

It turned out I had an older version of Belarc Advisor. I installed the
newest one--and my updates are not being installed. Belarc Advisor says to
reinstall them...but there seems to be nothing I can do to get them to
install. I've exited my firewall and antivirus first etc...nothing helps.

My suggestion would be to download them and install them individually offline:

1. Make note of the ones that need reinstalling according to Belarc.
2. Download them directly from the Update Catalog.
3. Remove any of them that show in your ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
4. Reboot.
5. Shut down everything in your SYSTEM TRAY.
6. Shut down everything in your TASK LIST (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.
7. Install your downloaded update.
8. Reboot.
9. Recheck status with Belarc.

If you have more than one update to install I would suggest doing them one at a
time, repeating steps 5-8 for each one. In fact, ANYTIME I install a program I
follow steps 4-8.
I hope this will take care of your update installation issue.

i fixed this problem yesterday. i run sp2, and had my automatic update
settings at "download update but allow me to install". this is not the
recommended setting.
a pop up notified me yesterday that a critical update had been downloaded,
and so i clicked to install it. it installed succesfully, (i thought), but
when i restarted my computer, the same installation kept popping up for me to
install. everytime i installed it, it was reported as unsuccesfull at my
windows update installation history page.
so.... i restored my computer to one day before, let the install download to
my computer. i went to my windows update settings, in the control panel, and
changed it to the default setting, (which is "download and install all
critical updates automatically...(recommended setting), installed the update,
and shut my computer down for the night. (no reboot. a complete shut
down)(this may not even be necessary for you, but at least shut it completely
down for a few minutes)
when i turned my computer on this morning, that install notification did not
pop up, and when i checked windows update installation history, the
download/update was successful.
i believe it was my automatic update settings that kept telling me to
install the same download over and over again.
i hope this helps you, and i wish i could tell this to everyone i see here
that has this same problem.
