I'm using vista (latest sp).

Since about a month windowsupdate isn't working anymore. I noticed it whe MS
had an extra update some weeks ago.
Starting from IE 7, I do get the settings window, but the windows stays
white and the little
clock near the mousepointer simply keeps truning for ages.
Chosing windowsupdate directly from the settings window results in exactly
the same problem.

Then yesterday a popup from the system tray said microsoft had a solution
for some problems One of these was a fix for an wmp error. That update
could be downlaodes and installed manually. I went to the microsoft site
(checked the url of course) and downloaden the file
Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x86.msu
I ran that file . A couple of seconds later an window openden telling me
that the prepration for installing the update was finished (or something to
that extend in Dutch). But although it said something was finfshed, the
windows didn't close and the green busy 'light' kept on scroling from left
to right. I left it for an hour or so, but.. no change. I needed task
amanger to kill the install application.

I hope this makes any sense.

Ik did check on virusses and other crap. I use MSdefender (which BTW won't
update). I have AVG free (updates and fnctions flawless and have
superantispyware (latestt) that updates ok and doesn't find anything wrong.
So I figured the defender update problem, de microsoft updat problem and the
manually update problem with the wmp fix might be related, but I cannot find
malware with any other utility.

Thanks for any info

Hello Gerard,

Going to the portal, sometimes going there, fix different issues, like this,

Can you update Defender manually via
<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal>

Look in the right side panel for a 32 bits
-=-

no joy..

Then run SFC /SCANNOW

System File Checker (SFC) checks that all Vista files are where they should
be and that they are uncorrupted.
WHY: You want to ensure that core operating system files have not been
damaged or modified.
How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System
Files with System File Checker : SFC /SCANNOW

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919). [PS: You're using an awful
anti-virus application.]

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

I ran the MSRT (full scan) overnight and no malware was detected at all.
The online scan ( the link provided me with a beta) couldn't be run. Not
even in safe mode. It returned ERROR 0x0C600C03.

Do you have any ideas what I can try next?

BTW: I did use mcafee stinger as wel (latest of course). Stinger didn't find
anything either.

Thanks for taking an interest

Gerard
