windowsupdate does not work after install IE 8 on win xp sp3

Dear all,

I work on win xp sp 3, and used IE7.
I downloaded and installed IE8.
After reboot, I tried update.microsoft.com, I can choose Express or Custom,
but in both cases, I get a message:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
"

Browsing works.
I tryed to disable windows firewall, no change.
I tryed to disable ad-aware, no change.
No other anti-virus / fw installed.

No proxy is used.
I also tried restarting windows update process:
1.. proxycfg -d
2.. net stop wuauserv
3.. net start wuauserv
No change.

Furthermore, manually downloading
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v8...uv3wuredir.cab by
typing url in browser works!

Help please.

That's an HTTP 404 for a new version of MU I wasn't aware of.

Try using IE8's compatibility mode to see if that changes the symptom.

Otherwise try switching from MU to WU and see if that changes the
symptom.

1. HTTP 404? Typing url
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v8...uv3wuredir.cab in
IE8 allows me to download the file without error!

2. Where is IE8 compatibility mode?

3. WU redirects to MU, so cannot be used anymore. But tells a warning saying
your page opens ones of my trusted web pages. Great, if it is trusted, I
think he shouldn't tell me it's dangerous .

VIRUS !AVAST! AND ZONE ALARM WERE TURNED OFF PRIOR TO INSTALL

"I have spent nearly over three days trying to install IE8. I have had to
use IE6 because IE7 does the same thing. I installed all the critical
updates, uninstalled them, and the reinstalled them.

When you first start IE8 the screen blinks a white screen for about two
seconds and then nothing. Just Blink....

I have downloaded a new Windows Update Agent and Dial A Fix and ran them
following instructions exactly. I have also tried several crypto svs start
and stops as well as re registering WUPS and .DLL's

This is driving me crazy.

I have spent nearly another day on researching help for this bug...I also
reset the winsock and tried to rerun Dial A Fix and it reported that it could
not find what version of Internet Explorer I was using, so some .DLLs will
not be re-registered.

I will try these two tips now. I also reset winsock. Keep on trying...
the different windows user did not work as their is only one administrator
account.

Tried the Safe mode/with networking and it did the same flash then
nothing....and I loaded IE8 with firewall and !Avast! turned off

Guess it is time to re install XP ... 4 times in 4 years, never get a
virus,worm, or spyware, but I can't keep this thing from throwing a shoe
every so often.

Thanks for your feedback. 80072EFD errors very often point to connection
problems (on your end or MS's end).
