And not Automatic updates either...

I am currently logged in as administrator, on win xp sp2 home edition
swedish computer, from Dell, and my problem is that I can't get the automatic
updates to work... (and no, I don't want to reinstall windows xp). I t
doesen't even work on the http://update.microsoft.com website, it just says
that the installation has failed, for all of my chosen updates. I don't know
what has caused this problems???

What are the registry key I have to reset, to make this work again? Or is my
only option to reinstall Windows XP Home Edition Swedish version?

Ok, I've done all of the steps in each of the documents you guys gave me and
no luck. One thing I did notice however is that my Automatic Updates service
is not running and when I try to manually start it I get the following
error...

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer. Error
1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does
not implement the service.

Now what?

thanks,

glenn

I have read these replies and I think your problem has been
mis-interpreted.

Does it go like this

You go to the windows update site- go through the routine - select the
Install Updates and start the process. The the updates download OK but
fail when installing without any error message beyond "Installation
Failed" or words to that effect?

If so I have had the same problem for well over a year, never bothered
fixing it because it will involve a system file check.

http://www.petri.co.il/what's_system_file_checker.htm

Which involves making a slipstream disk cos my original is SP1 and
will replace a lot of undesirable stuff I have got rid of - Windows
Messenger for eg and finally I can't be arsed.

The WU Updates download into the
Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads folder

If the Auto WU is broken they won't install, they just fail.

Note down all the KB numbers of the updates you are missing, find them
in the above folder and install manually.

Hope that helps.

Jonah

Ok, try reinstall the wuauserv (automatic updates), typing this at the
command prompt.

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\au.inf

If you are prompted to insert your OS CD, type the following path,
"%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386"

Also you can try re-registering the related dlls to this service, typing
this at the command prompt. (you can create a batch file with the notepad)

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll /s
net stop wuauserv
cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
rd /s /q DataStore
copy %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\wua* %windir%\system32
regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s
net start wuauserv
exit

What do you think has been misinterpreted?
You are replying to the OP who so far has not responded
to a request for diagnostics. A "Me too!" is piggybacking
on this thread and that is what the majority of the discussion
has been about.

Have you discussed that somewhere else?
The only thing that I can find which looks like a problem report
by a poster called jonah in here is:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...5599587b8dd573

Unk gave that poster the reasonable suggestion to try installing the update
manually, since the symptom looked like a permissions problem with an
automated install, which could be judged only by the comment

<quote>
The only thing I can see in the log files is
something wrong with the SID token
</quote>

since no other diagnostics were provided.

That is the sort of docmentation we are waiting for from the OP.
The "Me too!" clearly has a totally different symptom
but has been answered accordingly. That, plus the totally
meaningless Subject is what is causing the confusion in this thread.
