Hi all, I find the way to return from v5 windows update to v4.
Go to windowsupdate catalog page (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp) and follow the link on left menu bar to windowsupdate, it goes to v4 and does not redirect to v5, U can install all updates you need without any problem! BTW when returns to windowsupdate using IE menú... this goes to v5 again but you can manually goes to v4 using this way I find!Hope this helps you! |

That is a temporary solution to a non issue.
Also if you are using Windows XP, soon V4 will not be an option for updates. If you have issues with V5 you should resolve them because you WILL be using V5 sooner or later. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/ "Gabriel P." <Gabriel P.@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news B7E77CA-6675-4363-8AE1-...> Hi all, I find the way to return from v5 windows update to v4. > > Go to windowsupdate catalog page (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp) and follow the link on left menu bar to windowsupdate, it goes to v4 and does not redirect to v5, U can install all updates you need without any problem! > > BTW when returns to windowsupdate using IE menú... this goes to v5 again but you can manually goes to v4 using this way I find!> > Hope this helps you! |

That is very nice that we should resolve our problems with WU5. However, if
you use the WU online help center and submit a problem, you will receive a response from Microsoft stating that MS cannot help anyone with a ver5 problem because ver5 has not been officially launched and your support request will be closed by MS. If you then call Microsoft, you will be told by the support engineer that Microsoft has not trained any engineers yet on WU5 and they will not help when you call because they don't know anything about WU5. You are told to call back after the official launch of version 5. Of course, that is only a few days away and I don't see how Microsoft is going to train everyone by then. Plus, MS has been pushing ver 5 to XP boxes which have auto updating on automatic since July 29 and thus should have trained engineers ready to assist anyone who had ver 5 silently installed on their box (or who went to the MS web page and installed it themselves). The support engineer I spoke with could not answer a single question I had about WU5. My case was left unresolved. I have no history in ver.5. except for what I have installed using ver.5 but no history from ver. 4. My iuhist.xml file in C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 is missing so even if I could get back to ver. 4, I don't think I would have any history there any longer. I know a bunch of users with XP Pro who have no history in ver. 5. The Microsoft engineer I spoke with had no idea how I could be helped. I was told to wait about a month and then call back as the engineers would be trained by then on ver. 5! I was also told that MS was not currently pushing ver. 5 to any XP boxes which is not true. I was also told that ver5 requires you to have installed SP2 and I was advised that if I do not intend to install SP2 (and I do not) that I should continue to use ver4. I'm going to try this solution mentioned here. I have also found directions for uninstalling ver 5 which I will try next. Others have been successful in uninstalling ver5. It sounds like a tech with less than no knowledge.
As you know a mini rollout started 29 July 2004. V5 installs without SP2. When did you attempt to submit an online support incident? If before Thursday, that was the correct answer. If after Thursday, a tech did not get the word of the mini rollout and so was giving old information. You could try again and see if it has changed. As for the training aspect, that is probably more true than it should be but unfortunately common throughout the industry, not just Microsoft. My history is intact. That does nothing to explain why your histories is gone but it does show it does not happen all the time. The trick is to find out what the computers that lost the history have in common that others do not. V4 will be worthless for you shortly since V4 will soon cease to function with Windows XP. If you go that route, you may as well skip Windows Update in all forms for your Windows XP computer. Why do you not intend to install SP2? -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/ "Melelina" <> wrote in message news:... > That is very nice that we should resolve our problems with WU5. Sorry, I just saw this. You are right that ver 4 is no longer available to
XP users. Of course, that isn't stopping users trying to force it to be available. There are a lot angry XP users right now. None of us want to run auto updating enabled as a service or BITS on manual either. We want WU 4 back that doesn't require these services to be turned on. I don't intend to install SP2 partly because I have a Visioneer USB scanner (a really good one that I did not get cheap and is not very old) running W98 software on XP. I had to get a hack from Visioneer for this as this scanner was the only one that Visioneer did not submit a driver for XP to MS. I am reasonably sure SP2 will break this. I have no intention of spending $150 to buy a new scanner just so I can use SP2. As I answered you a few minutes ago in a more recent message in this NG, I and others don't consider SP2 to be for us. We consider it to be for dummies and newbies. Now, if Microsoft has changed long standing policy and will no longer allow us to get critical patches for XP unless we have SP2 then that is about the only thing that would get me to upgrade but I would think there would be lawsuits to stop that as I have read most businesses do not intend to upgrade anytime soon and they would be very upset if they could not get critical patches any longer for SP1. Since I will never have my history in WU 5 to me there is no point in using WU. I used it only because of the nice way it had my history. I will just get my patches from MS download site in the future. That way they will be on disk and easy to burn copies too. I have no intention of using auto updating ever and I don't want MS nagging me about it. I am very careful before I install any critical patch and I first read everything about it and then read the Security forum and MS Help forum at DSLreports for issues concerning the patch before I install. Auto updating is a terrible idea for anyone except a newbie and a dummy and they won't be upgrading to SP2 so this whole idea is rather useless. It would have been much better if MS had simply come out with a stand alone new IE that has excellent security and drops ActiveX and that could be installed on all current OSes. I never use IE (except for WU and speed tests that use java applets) and MS should have made IE uninstallable from Windows. If MS really cared about security these two things are what they would have done instead of this silly SP2. My understanding is V5 is necessary for updates.
You should be able to get some updates as long as you have v5 whether you have SP2 or not. Except of course any updates that may be dependant on SP2. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/ "Melelina" <> wrote in message news:... > Sorry, I just saw this. There will be a Spanish edition of XP SP2 shortly after the English version
is released. There are no plans to close V4 Windows Update - especially since older OS will not be able to use V5 (As a guide, V*3* is still available for NT4 users...) ___ Kari This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
