I keep getting this error every time I try to update. No other information
is provided. Anyone else ran into this problem or know the solution to it?

Hello hypnoj,

0x80070424

ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST BITS service is deleted.

80070424 usually means that the BITS service (required by Windows Update) is
not running.

Have a look at this articles. It may be relevant to your problem.

The above explanation was for a previous Version of BITS but, there has been
an update for BITS since Vista came out.
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159>

Is BITS disabled ? It can be set to Manual and the system will update
successfully but, will not update if BITS is Disabled.
Suggest you run the BITS Repair Tool to see if that helps resolve the issue
after installing the update for it:

I hope this helps (it should)!

Have tried to follow the procedures described in these articles, but they do
not help at all. Nor is the BITS service disabled - it is running and seems
to be working just fine.

I also just noticed that my "Turn windows features on or off" has gone blank
- all of this happened on the 10th of May or something like that - before
that everything was working just fine as far as I could tell ... and I cant
really think of anything that should have made it fail on the 10th of May
either to be honest...

Anyone have some bright ideas? Not that it matters much to be honest - its
just annoying ( will Reinstall the machine tomorrow and put Ultimate x64 on
it )

Cheers

I've found the followin procedure in another website and it worked for
me:

(1)

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command
Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.
In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command.
REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL
Press ENTER.
You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.
Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.

(2)

1. Click Start. Choose Run.
2. In the Run box, type: regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
3. Click OK.

It appears many have tried to solve this error without adminstration rights
in the 'cmd' windows. "Razipe" procedure posted here works (as well as all
other solutions offered) simply because right clicking the 'Command Prompt'
item in 'Accessories' and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' carries out the
commands as administrator - which appears to be absolutely essential with
Vista. For XP it appears less essential.

I have been encountering this problem as stated in the subject area for the past three months. Microsoft has been contacted but he seems to give a deaf ear about it. Probable we still have to wait for a while for any possible answer/solution
