Please try disabling or uninstalling Avast, restart Vista, then try Windows
Update again. Does that change anything?
Are you running Internet Explorer with any web proxies defined? If so, you
might need to inform Windows Update of those proxy settings - come back for
more advice if needed.
80072ee6 has been seen in the past mainly in the context of MSN Messenger
login failures. In those instances it was cured by re-registering the the
library MSXML3.dll. I don't know how relevant this cure might be to Vista
Windows Update. Assuming it might be, then proceed as follows:
1. Open a command prompt window with full administrative privileges (consult
Vista help on how to do this - I don't have a copy of Vista with me at this
time to check).
2. Enter the command:
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
3. Assuming it was succesful, close the command window and try Windows
Update again. If it was not succesful, report the error message back here.
Waiver clause: there is as yet very little accumulated knowledge on possible
problems with Windows Update in Vista. Although the Vista support forums
direct you to this windowsupdate forum, this windowsupdate forum serves all
versions of Windows, and is not Vista-specific. It is possible that you
might receive better answers from one of the Vista-specific forums (the ones
with .vista. in their names).
