WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe???

I've been trying to resolve an issue on "failed installations" of updates
on the windows update site. I've tried various troubleshooting methods such
as: deleting the softwaredistribution folder, renaming catroot2, checked
services that are needed for windows update to function. All methods
mentioned did not fix the installation of updates. I recieve no error
messages from the windows update site, but do get this in the
windowsupdate.log= WARNING: WU client failed installing updates with error
0x80240020.
I found a file on the web "WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe" which is
supposed to install the windows update agent on my XPsp2 machine. Should I
install this file? Will installing this file install a fresh copy of windows
update agent on my pc? Maybe one of the windows update agent files is corrupt
or missing on my pc. I do not recieve any errors, but maybe is a possibilty(?)
Is there anything else I can try to fix the windows update installation
failures?

Yes, I am logged on as Administrator. I also went ahead and installed
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe. It didn't seem to help either.

I merged the .reg file as suggested by Stephon to no avail. The udates
download but still fail to install.

Are you installing using an account with administrative authority?
Try doing it with the real Administrator account instead?

says it replaces kernel32.dll. Try doing a search for that module to find out
where all it is and what versions of it there are. Also check the install log
and find out what the name of the copy would have been and if it is still there
(e.g. in %windir%\System32).

In fact, since the update says "restart required" perhaps it would
be enough merely to reboot and logon then as Administrator?
E.g. the reason a different name is used is so that during the
boot the previously "in-use" module can be renamed and
thus replace it.

Another possibility which I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet
is that if you are continuing to run security programs or if your security
programs start up during the boot, they might prevent the successful
copying of that module. In that case perhaps making your first reboot
after running the install a "safe" boot would be enough to prevent that
but then I'm not sure if the right ControlSet in the registry is used
to complete the install. It should be safe enough to test that
and see what happens.


Do you get the same results if you download that update and
install it manually? If you did that and you still had trouble
you could use the update's /verbose switch and see if there
were any more clues in the CabBuild.log file that would create.
