WindowsXP update error

Can anyone shed any light on this problem I keep getting on two
different PCs at home, which I have now rebuilt multiple times!
Everything is running OK on the PC until you come to shutdown and XP
informs you that there are updates to install, and it will shut down
when it is completed. THis process seems to work fine 9 out of ten
times however the one time it doesnt work, you leave the PC shutting
down and installing the updates, but it hangs during the process. I
get up in the morning and see the PC is still running and according to
the screen is still installing 1 of 1 updates, I come to the
conclusion that 8 hours for one update is a little excessive and that
the PC has obviously hung, so I force it to shut down. Then when I
reboot it comes up with a Win32 error, followed by a SVC host error.
from this point on it will not connect to anything and hangs, which
leaves me no alternative but to force the shut down again. At this
point I usually give up and end up rebuilding the PC.
Has anyone else had this issue, and know how to fix it?

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.
