Hi guys,

Dunno why my computer was unable to update to windows XP SP2 ( it shows the
product key error) . I suspect my windows version along with the computer was
pirated.

In this case, I have obtained a valid licensed copy of windowsXP with SP2.
When I tried to use upgrade, the computer hangs after restart and prompt me
for a "SP2 disk" while I don't have a seperate one.

I simply don't want my data to be ruined by formatting the harddisk and
reinstalling the new copy of windows.

Could someone here suggest a method for this?
( I needed SP2 urgent for the installation of a PCI-USB2.0 card )

thousands of thanks.

Back up your data and then reformat. External USB hard disks are nice.

Reformat is obvious but I would expect my data to be kept.
Please suggest other methods.

That's like wanting to have your cake and eat it too. If you reformat, you
will lose everything. You need to back up your data to a CD, external hard
disk or USB key. You should do this anyway or some day you will lose all
your data. Back up is a computer user's best friend.

Sorry, I don't know any.
