For some as yet unknown reason, I cannot access Windows Update or Microsoft
Update. The sites freeze immediately. I took this up with Microsoft who
provides free support for update issues. I volleyed back and forth for a
month with the tech who seemed knowledgeable. I did everything
.....reinstalling SP4, reregistering update dll files, renaming the software
distribution folder, spyware scanning, tweaking my internet connection. The
tech ultimately came to the conclusion that my OS was corrupt(?!?!?!)
......so I went all out and got a NEW 160GB hard drive and reinstalled Win2K
(disc is SP1). At that point I was able to access Windows Update and I
downloaded all the service packs to SP4, also downloaded IE6 and most if not
all of the security updates. I continued reinstalling my software and it
seems that after I installed Office 2000...I could not
access Windows Update any longer. It surely could have been another program
but at this point I am not sure....just frustrated. I recontacted Microsoft
where the guy suggested I had corrupt files again.....HOW....New HD NEW
OS?>?>?>...
Meanwhile it still freezes when I try to access Windows Update, but the rest
of my PC runs great. Oh yes, I have a P3 950MHz machine with 512 ran and now
almost 200Gb HD total.
I have read other posts suggesting that ver 6 was the culprit. As a matter
of fact this is EXACTLY when the updated ceased to function!! It auto
updated itself and that was the end of it. I would be more than happy to
reinstall ver3 of Windows update which worked fine.
Anyone with similar issues or constructive comments would be greatly
appreciated!!
Thanks!!!
Matthew

Just as a follow up....
An individual who read a similar post of mine on the alt.os.windows2000
group adirected me to a link that took me the the Windows update catalog
version 4 which sttil works fine. To think I went so far as to replace my HD
and reinstall my OS ot ger ver 6 to run is truoblesome.
