Winkey-D suddenly not working?

Hey there!

I just noticed an hour ago or so that Winkey-D shortcut-combination
stopped working. I tried to do restart without luck.
Also, it can't be related to keyboard failure as the keys Winkey and D
separately are working. Every other comibination like Winkey-M, Winkey-E
etc is working.

Is there a way to check if everything's OK? Some registry tweak,
messing with gpedit.msc?

Thanks for answering!

Oh yeah, i'm using Win7 RC x86

Then why are you posting in a Vista group?

Because i already posted there:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...8-ade812d275ff

As W7 and Vista are pretty similar, or lets say their architecture is
almost 1:1, i thought some Vista solution for same kinda problem works
for 7 as well.

Bad guess. This group is for VISTA.

The source of this problem and the solution are no different in Win 2K, Win
NT, Win XP, Vista, or Win 7 and probably in Win 9X as well.

Try doing SFC. Type cmd above start button in search box>rt. click when
pops up>run as admin and sfc /scannow at prompt. You might want to
reinstall the keyboard driver.

Why in the world can't you restart? It shouldn't have anything to do with
your initial key combo problem.

You telling us you can't shut down at all, not even with duh button?

Senor hax--

Actually, the architecture of the Win 7 kernel has significant differences
and they are spelled out ectopically all over MSDN, and in deep dive
workshops, and it's hardly "1:1", but as far as your particular problem
with the key combos, there ain't no significant difference whatsoever no
how.

I'm interested though in why you can't start.
I'm interested in why you haven't installed another keyboard driver. Maybe
your driver is corrupt and while you can use most keys, you don't have all
functionality.

What happened further when you did SFC?

Best,

CH

Sorry for misspellings (not a native english speaker).

I meant after restart the problem wasn't still gone.
trying sfc now. though does it work as i have windows defragment
disabled (using a third-party one)? i mean after all its purpose is to
replace broken system files with previous?

edit: also, forgot to mention it's a laptop. and i haven't got a spare
keyboard atm here
edit2: sfc: > Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

is it possible for a combo button malfunction? i mean D and Winkey
separately may work, but if you press them together, NOT? how does the
chip work exactly?

Your English is just fine. The vast majority of people in my town, and my
state can't speak or write English well at all and their vocabulary is very
limited and they were supposed to learn it when they grew up, but they
obviously didn't. My country had a clown candidate for Vice President who
couldn't speak English sentences well at all. She hid from the press and
during the few interviews she did, it was difficult to understand her
tangential sentences.

Now she is having her "memoirs" written for her after 4 years in politics.

First as to disabling defrag. As a principle, I'd advise you to run a
defrag app fairly often, but what it does iclearly different from System
File Checker which has been improved in Vista and again in Win 7.

My personal choice is Perfect Disk, but the native defrag in Vista is worth
running.

i mean after all its purpose is to
> replace broken system files with previous?

That's correct. But the two aren't related at all.

SFC scans files and when it detects a file is corrupted, it replaces it with
an intact one. They are not related or dependent upon each other. SFC is
capable of fixing some components when they are broken or a file is
corrupted in Windows.

I don't believe your problem is the keyboard itself, but it's possible, and
if your laptop is under warranty, they should replace it. It is easy and
quick to exchange a keyboard in a laptop or notebook.

I'm sure it might be possible for a combo malfunction, but I'm not that
knowledgeable about the physiology of keyboards.

Did you try replacing the keyboard driver by downloading one from the
keyboard maker's website?

Hi, mrhax.

I'm running Win7 Ultimate x64 RC (build 7100), as it says in my Sig. What
is the exact Win7 version that you are running?

When I press <Win>+<d>, my screen clears and I see my Desktop. What happens
when you do that?

By the way, a new feature in Win7 RC, in case you haven't found it, is to
simply move the mouse cursor to the extreme lower right corner, near the
clock. This also clears the screen and shows the Desktop - momentarily,
unless you click the mouse there, in which case the Desktop will stay.

What is the make and model of your laptop? Did this problem with <Win>+<d>
happen recently, or has your computer always behaved this way? Have you run
Vista on it? Is the behavior the same in Vista?

Defrag has nothing to do with fixing broken files. It fixes files whose
sectors (really: allocation units) are not contiguous (i.e., not all
together in one area of the disk) by rearranging where the files' pieces
are on disk. This is meant to improve the efficiency of disk data
transfers.

Anyway, sfc doesn't use defrag at all.

I suspect that if you look up the meanings of the words "broken" and
"fragmented" in your English to Portuguese dictionary, they would seem to
have the same meaning, so your mistake is a very natural one - that even a
native speaker might make :-)
