WinLive Messenger being blocked by ZoneAlarm

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me out on this. I just installed Windows Live
Messenger and I can't connect. I get the following error:

Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is
temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

Error Code: 8100030d

I did a bunch of stuff to try to get it working. Eventually I shutdown my
ZoneAlarm firewall and voila, it worked fine. Now the tricky part is
figuring out how to let ZoneAlarm let Messenger connect. I've done a few
things, but for some reason, it's just not letting it through. Anyone run
into this and get it working?

Thanks,
Wayne

Try this...

ZoneAlarm Pro 3.1 or later and ZoneAlarm Security Suite 5.0 or later:
Start ZoneAlarm, click "Program Control" in the left navigation list, and
then click the "Programs" tab on the right.
If Msnmsgr.exe is already on the list, delete it by right-clicking on "MSN
Messenger", in the "Programs" list and then click "Remove".
Add MSN Messenger to the list:
- Click "Add"
- Click "Browse", locate the C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger folder, and then
double-click the Msnmsgr file to add the latest version of Msnmsgr.exe to
the "Programs" list. Note: The computer settings determine whether the file
name is followed by the extension ".exe."
After you add Msnmsgr.exe to the "Programs" list, click the Access and
Server entries for MSN Messenger, and then click Allow

Yup, that was the first thing I tried. I've also uninstalled it, removed it
from ZoneAlarm, and then reinstalled. Same effect. I can sign in using
Windows Messenger, and I can sign on using MSN Messenger on my second
computer. And I can sign in on a friends computer that has Windows Live
Messenger also. It just seems to be something buggy with my installation.

It's almost like ZoneAlarm is blocking the port, but I'm unsure on that one.
I'll have to dig into the logs a bit more. I'm going through the Live log
right now, I notice it's trying on port 1724, which seems odd because I
thought the messenger service worked on a 1800-something port (I forget the
exact port number off the top of my head).

This does definitely seem to be a ZoneAlarm issue though. I've tried the
usual regsvr32 some.dll etc.. fix. That didn't work. And like I said, it
works fine when ZoneAlarm is disabled. I might just try uninstalling
ZoneAlarm for now, and then reinstall it, to see if I can get it working
that way.

Thanks for the response though Brian.

Regards,
Wayne

I don't know why.. but uninstalling ZoneAlarm, then reinstalling it seems to
have worked. The weird thing is that there was no pop-up saying "Allow or
Deny" for Windows Live Messenger. I would have expected that at least. All
the programs that were allowed previously are no longer in the list (eg.
WoW, etc...). But hey... I'll take it, as long as it works )

I figured you already did something along those lines. Unfortunately, I
could find nothing else on your problem. Will post if I find anything else.

Good to hear it's working. I had a similar problem with using Remote
Assistance in Messenger a while back and reinstalling the firewall fixed it.
Never did figure out what was causing the problem. At the time was using
Mcafee Personal Firewall Plus...using OneCare now and have had no problems
to this point.
