| I am using a fairly old Compaq Presario desktop running Windows 98. Last
| June 2004, I installed the recommended Windows security updates from the
| Microsoft windows update site. Once I rebooted the system, I began getting
| the WINLOGON window saying "This program has performed an illegal operationa
| dn will be shutdown. If the problem persists contact the program vendor." I
| could never figure out the problem so I used my COMPAQ quick restore cd and
| the problem went away but so did the security updates. I went back to the
| update site today and again selected the install recommended security updates
| with the same result as last time! Any ideas as to what is happening to
| Winlogon or how to fix the problem and keep the security updates? tks
In the future realize your queries are best answered in the news group best suited to the
problem you are posting about. This is a Win98 related issue and not a Windows Update
issue so bear in mind that it should have been posted in a Win98 related news group.
Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)
start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files
1) Download the following three items...
Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp
Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp
Ad-aware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")
Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt484.zip
Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM.
2) Update Ad-aware with the latest definitions.
3) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible.
4) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Ad-aware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
5) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
