Winows Update in Vista Locks Up

I have an E6700 CPU chip with 4 Gig RAM, PCIE ATI 1900's and Microsoft Vista
Ultimate for an OS. When I click on "Control Panel / Windows Update" or
place the following command in the Run Window, "control.exe /name
Microsoft.Windows Update", I get a blank explorer window opened with
"Control Panel \ Windows Update" in the address bar and nothing else. I let
it sit for quite a while hoping it was just busy or something. No good.
When I want to close the window I have to do it using Task Manager / End
Task. Has anybody else experienced this behavior and what did you do about
it?

It is a fairly recent phenomenon, however, I am unable to track it to a
single event or installation.

Thank You in advance for your reply to this inquiry.

Might be the service is not running. ( I would have expected an error
message saying that, still it's worth checking ).

Type services.msc in the start search box, when it pops up click it and
ok the uac prompt. Scroll down the services window to Windows Update.
Right click it , select Properties and set the Startup Type to Automatic
(Delayed start) click Apply then OK.

Right click it again and select start.

You also need to scroll to Remote Procedure Call and use a similar
procedure make sure it is set to Automatic and started.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply, I checked both. They are on automatic and are
listed as started.
RPC has a second entry with "Locator" at the end. It is in manual and I
started it, no help.

Thanks again

No. A decision I made when I built this computer and I think I have a
better system for it. I use ZoneAlarm for Firewall and Virus.

I will try turning ZA off for a minute and check. Good idea.

Thanks,

Rob

I tried turning off the Zonealarm startup shortcut and rebooting then trying
Windows Update again, No luck.

It was a good idea.

I had the same problem and could not find an answer. I recentl
installed AVG 8.0 and decided to uninstall it and install Avast.
Problem solved
