Hi,
I've been infected with Winspyprotect on one of my networked machines which
is a rogue anti-spyware program similar to Spy Axe. I tells you falsely that
your system is infected and then try's to coerce you into buying the program
by continuous pop-ups.
I've done a bit of research on the net on the other machine and found
several sites which claim they can remove it, but as they're all .exe files
I have no way of knowing if they're genuine or if they're a trick which will
infect the other machine.
Can anyone offer any advice please,
Regards,
Alan.

Windows Defender would probably be already installed in your system. If you
are able to connect to the Internet without any issues, update it's
definitions via Windows Update on the infected system and run a full
thorough system-scan.Even if you are not able to connect,do run the scan
completely. If it fails to detect any unwanted software AND you are not able
to connect, try downloading the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool's
latest version from the Microsoft Download Center on a clean machine, save it
on some portable media and run it on the infected machine.
I assume you do not use Windows Live OneCare. It is a very good anti-spyware
and anti-virus solution,combined with several other features.A free 90-day
trial is available for download.

Alan,
I've no idea whether SpyBot will remove the program but SpyBot is free, well-known and safe.

Thank you all so much for the advice and links etc. I'll give a go over the
next day or two. I remember very well what a mission it was to get rid of
Spy Axe a couple of years ago when I was running XP.
If I'm successful I'll post what I did which may be of use to others who may
find themselves in this position.
Thanks Again,
Alan.

I don't know to whom you're speaking since you didn't quote anything, but go

Hi,

I had this program on my laptop, and I just removed it about 2 minutes
ago. I've googled 'remove winspyware protect', etc etc and was given a
bunch of spyware removal tools that either needed to be purchased or
didn't work, or were fake. Then I looked on Yahoo Answers, and someone
suggested downloading a malware removal program. I downloaded it, ran
the scan, it detected some of the programs including winspyware, and I
removed it (the programs are now safely in quarantine). I have
restarted my computer and I ran the scan again, no malwares were found,
and I didn't see any trace of the winspyware. No popups, no annoying
task bar logos, nothing. It worked for me, so I figured I'd post it
here. To download the program that I used, click below:
'Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and reviews -
CNET Download.com' (http://tinyurl.com/5t3gcf)
Make sure that after you install it you update it (the update is free,
but they'll ask if you want to update it or not), then run the scan,
and remove the items. A notebook log will show up showing the removed
programs. I hope this helped. To see the original page where I saw the
tips on how to remove winspyware, click below:
'WinspyProtect? - Yahoo! Answers'

Hope this helped. As far as networks go, I have no idea whether the
program can be spread to all computers, since I've never worked with
networks before. Best of luck,

K
