Winsxs Folder 10GB and increasing!

Ok, so since i've been running vista ulitmate x64, i've noticed that my
hard drive has been continuously shrinking and I haven't installed or
created any files or programs. So, I discovered that my winsxs folder is
huge, 90% of my windows folder and from what I understand it stands for
"Windows side by side" for the 32bit compatibility. I don't have a space
issue, at the moment, but i would like to know if there is any way to
shrink this folder down.

Any Ideas?

I did the disk clean up and got some space back, but as for the HP
software, I purged my computer of that crap long ago.

I did some more research and apparently the winsxs folder is for old
dlls from when people upgrade from xp to vista, but my vista is a clean
install.

I took a look around inside the folder and it looked like a bunch of
updates or something of that sort. I haven't deleted anything yet as i'm
leary about deleting anything in the windows folder.

any ideas?

Btw, found these...

Here is a link I found that may help you understand it more. From wha
I can tell, it is best to leave this folder be. It can cause som
really bad problems if you delete the wrong thing

Yeah, I figured as much. It just occured to me that it might be a sid
effect of SP1...I'd rather just leave it alone. 10GB is nothing thes
days and i have a 250GB harddrive anyway. Hopefully, it won't get an
bigger

Thanks for the help

Sxs stands for side by side versioning. This was an feature first
introduced, oddly enough, in Windows ME and of course improved in XP. It
was Microsoft's solution to the "DLL Hell" issue that plagued Win 9x and
provided a way to support multiple versions of same named DLLs. Windows
would recognize a potential conflict and place an incoming DLL in the Winsxs
tree rather than overwriting it elsewhere, would store applicable registry
data, etc.

In Vista the use of Winsxs seems to have changed and been greatly expanded.
Vista includes the Net Framework as a core technology (i.e. not as an add
in). Many of the files under Winsxs are related to the use of managed
code -headers, manifests, etc. It also seems to replace in part the I386
folder and to be a repository for installation related files as well as Dlls
etc.

It would definitely be best to leave it alone.

Hello,
That is your OS store of files and components. Most of the rest of the
folders like system32 are hard-linked to the same files that exist in
\windows\winsxs. Most of the files only live in one space, but depending
on how you are counting the space, you may count the space twice.
If you look under \windows\system32 for a filename and under
\windows\winsxs for the same file, it will be reported at both locations.
Most of time those files are occupying one space and hard-links exist that
point to that location. But if you just look at one folder each file
appears to exist at both locations and occupy the twice the space.
You should not be deleting or removing files from that folder.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
