this directory---winsxs--- appears to be connected with Windows Update. At
the present time it has over 5 gigs of data. Is it alright to delete or
clear out this directory?

Hello,
Do not delete that folder. Those are your OS files.
The OS will be broken if you delete that folder.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hi,

As Darrell pointed out do not delete that folder. To find out more about it
you can simply type "Winsxs" in Google. One of the main advantages of winsxs
over system32 is that you can have more than one version of a particular DLL
with the same name. Winsxs uses directories with version information to
isolate DLL's from each other.

Darrell,

>> At the present time it has over 5 gigs of data.

I suspect an implied question is "Why is it so big?"

FWIW as a point of comparison, in XPsp2 I just did a Win-F search of all files
under %windir%\winsxs ; then a Ctrl-a, Alt-Enter and found I have
only 246 Files, 44 Folders for a total size of 44.0 MB (46,165,028 bytes)
and total space of 44.5 MB (46,686,208 bytes) (I haven't done a defrag
in a while I guess. <w>)

And if I limit the search just to *.dll the number of files is only 39
and the total size is cut in half. ; )

Hello Robert,
That folder contains your OS files. Those files are then projected to the
correct locations in \windows and \windows\system32 by the use of
hard-links.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
