infected. It's BETRAYWARE that will further infect the system and demand

As to ' how did this happen ' ... there are myriad ways.
The system was not kept updated with all Security updates
3rd party programs/applications were not kept up to date [Flash, Adobe
Reader, Quicktime, RealPlayer, etc.]
You installed a 'video codec' when prompted to, thus infecting the system.
You visited a web page that used a 'malvertizement' to infect the system.
And on and on ...
