WinXP Activation on new system

I'm retiring an HP Pavilion and upgrading to a faster P4 computer without a
hard drive. I installed the Pavilion drive which had an existing retail copy
of XP home on it (upgraded from the OEM version). There are enough computer
component differences that I'm required to activate XP. I've tried online
and via the MS phone activation to no avail using the retail product key.

Can someone tell me how I can get the XP on the original drive activated on
the new computer?

Exactly what happens when you attempt to activate?
Can you do anything?

The automated phone system says that it does not recognize the product key
from the retail copy of XP as a valid key.
