Since downloading the SP2 update for WinXP Professional chkdisk runs
everytime my computer starts up - it didn't happen before the update! A
search for a solution only resulted in guidance for Win98 & ME, which is
obviously of no use to me.
I am not computer literate, therefore I would very much appreciate it if any
help you could give would be in very simple 'laymans terms' please.
Thanks in advance.

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)
http://support.wdc.com/download/

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Seagate - SeaTools
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool
http://www.fcpa.com/download/hard-drives/

Samsung - Disk manager

Thank you for the links Dave & for keeping the instructions basic (as I'd
requested). I did exactly what you suggested & it appears to have worked )
I very much appreciate your help. X
