Hi. Here's the situation. I installed ubuntu on my HD, which wiped out
everything on Windows that I had. I then reinstalled WinXP, and now Windows
doiesnt recognise that I have an onboard sound card. When I use applications
that require sound, it says "sound was not initialized". So does the 2002
edition of winXP have VIA Technology's sound files or not? I've tried
reinstalling everything, then opening MediaPlayer, with no success. Still my
sound card isn't recognised. I know that it works because when I choose to
boot up to ubuntu on Grub, the sound is perfect. But I dont want to use Linux
(hence why I'm asking for advice here). Yes, I've gone through the
troubleshooting on Win Help. When I view my system's hardware components, it
says that I dont have a sound card installed. So are there any sound files
that aren't being loaded to my pc when I installed XP? It won't be easy for
me to download the files off the internet because I don't have it at home.

By "sound files", I assume you mean drivers. And no - Windows XP may not
have the drivers built in for your particular sound card. The manufacturer
for your sound card (and/or chipset) should have said drivers *if* they
decided to support that hardware set in Windows XP. Visit their web site,
get their drivers for your particular sound card (chipset0 and install it on
your machine.

Easy or not - doesn't matter - you need the drivers for the software to talk
to the hardware properly and this is obviously not happening with your
Windws installation.
