WinXP SP-2 installed but... not installed?

I'm attempting to locate a work-around for the following problem:

The following sequence describes the problem and how it appeared:
1. AutoUpdate downloaded and prepared Windows XP Service Pack 2 for
installation.
2. Windows XP Service Pack 2 was installed from the Microsoft Update site.
3. AutoUpdate is still announcing it is ready to install SP-2.
4. Microsoft Update's site's log of update history shows two entries for XP
SP-2, one has successfully installed, the other is pending. Both have the
same date.

I'm wary about installing SP-2 over itself on a client's computer. That
could prove to be combustible.

Ideas?
