WinXP SP@ Setup Error

I am running SP2 from the CD. The program loads the files onto the hard
drive and then pauses a bit. Then I see a small window titled Setup Error
with the message Installation did not complete. There is no error number or
any other activity.

I have gone back to the Windows Update site and found that there are about
10 pre-SP2 updates available. When I try to download and install them I get
a message for each one of them that download failed. Again, no error number
or other info...just that the download failed.

I have gone to Add/Remove programs and found that there are a bunch of SP2
files already installed in the system but the whole service pack has not been
installed as there is no Security icon in Control panel and in the tray.

Any ideas please?

Carey,
Thanx for your prompt response.
I went through all the steps in the checklist and then ran Norton Utilities
to check the drive and windows just for good measure. I have run Ad Aware,
Spybot, SpySweeper on the system and cleaned all spyware. Norton AV 2005
runs clean.

Still get the same response as detailed in the original message.

Any further ideas please.

Just for the record, I got on the phone with MS SP2 Tech Support and they
worked with me for about 3 hours. We finally ran a chkdsk /r on the drive
and it found a bad cluster. This despite the fact that Scandisk and Norton
Disk Doctor had not found anything in earlier scans. After the cluster was
marked bad, we went back into the Update process and all proceded as it was
supposed to.

I also note that the System portion of the Event Log did have error messages
as far back as 3 days ago and yet the scandisks did not pick up the problem.

Got it done thanks to MS SP2 tech support.

Thanx,
CB
