Somebody brought me their computer with the error
pertaining to Microsoft KB article 885523 which will tell
me to either remove SP2 using any method available, or to
uninstall the program in Safe Mode.

Problem is, Windows crashed during the Service Pack
Install, rebooted, and it will not boot into safe mode, and
there is no %SystemRoot%\$ntservicepackuninstall$\
directory, hence I cannot possibly get to
%SystemRoot%\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst to uninstall
SP2 from the Recovery Console.

What now? I (and they) would prefer not to fresh install
Windows.

Hello Jayce,

If you do have the 135 try looking for the
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst" folder. There (at the At the
command prompt) type batch spuninst.txt

Look at article 875350 for other instructions on uninstalling SP2. Here is
a link to the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;[LN];875350

If this still does not allow for the uninstall you can insert and boot from
the Windows XP CD and select "Repair this Windows Installation" when you
see the prompt (it will come after you select to install Windows XP now"
option

Hope this helps

Thank You

Thanks for the reply, but like I said in the original post,
the directory doesn't exist. I will try the repair and see
if it works.
