While trying to install SP2 as an update to my computer, it starts the
install then I get the following messages:

'SvcPack2 setup could not backup registry key
HKCR\.mcl to file C:WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00039.

5: Access is denied (abort,retry,ignore)

Installation did not complete
Select 'ok' to undo the changes that have been made

WinXP has been partially updated and may not work properly.
