WinXP SP2 Windows Update Silent FAIL!

Hello!

I hope someone can help me with this odd problem. I'm trying to get a 3
month old laptop running WinXP Home with SP2 preloaded to successfully update
via the Windows Update page and it just wont.

I get no error message of any sort - just a cycling through the "checking to
see if your computer has the required update software blah blah", the "Choose
Express or Custom option" and ending in "Refresh system or troubleshoot"
page. This cycle just goes on indefinitely.

I am able to download specific packages like IE7, which validated my XP fine
then installed without a hitch so why can't I download/install or even get a
list of things to dl/install?

What you may want to try:

Installing the updated Windows Update Agent 3.0 standalone:

via WU/MU/AU:

Thanks Freudi,

your response was absolutely perfect! In fact I only needed to apply the
first solution (Windows Update Agent 3.0) to get the Windows Update service
to work correctly.
